Spring Break Track Meets!

This past break, several of our runners ran at Rose-Hulman the Saturday at the start of break, and Washington University this past Friday and Saturday. While Rose-Hulman was nothing special, we had a slew of outdoor personal records (especially from the 5K runners), and even a record, at Washington University, despite the cold weather.

Lauren Jonen set the club record in the 200m Dash with a time of 26.18. Great start to the season Lauren!

Now, for the PR”s (rolls up his sleeves).

PR”s:
5000m:
Beth McGreal – 18:25.25
Megan Mocogni – 18:38.78
Abby Madden – 19:15.68
Paige Oboikovitz – 19:36.85
Adam Cobert – 15:48.50
Matt Birkel – 15:55.78
Steve Krauklis – 16:35.13

1500m:
Evan White – 4:11.2

400m:
Erin Murphy – 1:01.38
Ryan Brewster – 52.54

100m:
Jayme Roberts – 11.58

800m:
Evan White – 2:01.49

200m:
Erin Murphy – 27.00

Next week, the team has NIRCA Nationals, because nothing says club team like having your big meet as the third meet of the season for a few, second for a few more, and the firstfor a majority of the team.

EDIT: Fixed ‘”Ashley Madden'” to ‘”Abby Madden.'” I knew that. I was just testing you. Congratulations Mark! You pass!

Club Relays: The Only Meet with More 3K Heats than 60 Heats

Hello to all you runners, ex-runners, and bored parents. Before we get started, I would like to point out that I”ve added links to all my footnotes. Am I awesome?

Anyway, this past Saturday, our club hosted our yearly Club Relays meet. It”s just like every other meet ever, except either the athletes have to drag this metal hollow tube thing around the track, or their times/distances get added together (also there are a lot more heats of the mile than the 60. We even had more heats of the 3K than of the 60! What kind of meet does that?). Full results can be found under the Club Relays tab. Both the boys and girls teams came in first, though the competition was fierce, and there were some truly awesome races. A special shoutout goes to J.P. Lllinas for an epic last 100 meters in the 800 leg of the Sprint Medley Relay. At 100 meters to go, J.P. made up a significant lead, and managed to just edge out the Michigan State runner for the win, winning the SMR by a hundredth of a second. Cue the cheesy 80”s rock!

It was a great meet to watch, and I even participated! I had to run the 60m hurdles. Do you have any idea how high the high hurdles are? They”re pretty high. Like, really high. Like, high enough that I”m pretty sure Ben made me run them as revenge for that whole ‘”All mistakes in these updates are Ben”s fault'” thing from a few weeks back. Clearly, our Esteemed Head Coach just can”t take a joke.

Anyway, meet club and personal records! Oh man are there a lot. You remember all those PR”s we had at our first GVSU meet? Well, we have more than that. We have like three GVSU”s worth of PR”s here. We also haven”t broken this many club records since the team”s very first meet.[citation needed]

So, go to the bathroom, get something to eat, turn off your e-mail, and say good-bye to your loved ones. We”re going to be here a while.

First, the girls.

Erin Murphy set the club record in the 60m dash with a time of 8.37 seconds…
Only to have it broken in the very next heat by Hayley Dorfman with a time of 8.23 (it was also, coincidentally, Hayley”s very first race with ITC. Way to make an entrance, Hayley). While getting your thunder stolen by the new girl must have stung something fierce, on the bright side Erin is now the record holder for being the shortest record holder in the history of the club, beating out the record Jonen set at the beginning of the season.

Emma Grimes set the mile record with a time of 5:08.22. I”m pretty sure absolutely positive that she can run a faster mile than I could in my prime. Thanks for threatening my masculine pride Emma!

Our girl”s 4x200m A team: Sarah Sheehan, Erin Murphy, Ima Eno, and Lauren Jonen set the club record with a time of 1:49.65, despite some rather questionable hand-offs (blind hand-offs are probably a bad idea when we only practice hand-offs for the two weeks before Club Relays).

The girl”s 4x800m A team: Shannon Sledz, Thea Cudnowski, Emma Grimes and Megan McGreal set the club record in the 4x800m with a time of 9:45.5.

Completing the Indoor Relay Trifecta, the girl”s 4x400m relay: Lauren Jonen, Ima Eno, Emma Grimes, and Erin Murphy set a new club record with a time of 4:09.02.

Oh, and because they felt bad about the Sprint Medley Relay (SMR) being the only baton-passing relay whose record hadn”t been broken yet, the girl”s SMR A team: Erin Murphy, Sarah Sheehan, Shannon Sledz, and Lauren Jonen set the record for the SMR with a time of 4:22.55.

Erin Murphy set a club record in the Triple Jump with a distance of 10.12m

Tare Emuze set the club record in the shot put with a distance of 8.61m

Now, for the boys!

The men”s 4x400m A team: Ben Kanevsky, Scott Luedkte, Ryan Brewster, and Jack Skelton set a new club record with a time of 3:28.73. They were also dressed in hot pink spandex and pink and purple shirts with pictures of unicorns and puppies, because there is (unfortunately) no law in the US against wearing outfits that make everyone around you want to burn out their own eyes with the holy, cleansing flames of a tire fire.

Anyway, back in the land of the sane, the men”s 4x800m relay: J.P. Llinas, Evan White, Zach Boehmke, and Steven Decker set a new record with a time of 8:08.47.

Thus ends the records (come on guys! Two records to the girls” eight? Clearly our only recourse before NIRCA is to ‘”accidentally'” leave all the girls at home. Either that or chase them off the team. Maybe if we throw enough <insert feminine stereotype here> at them, they”ll go away).

Now, for the PR”s. We will start with the girls (does ‘”ladies first'” count as one of the feminine stereotypes we can throw at them?). Due to the massive numbers, I”m going to just list the event, then the name, then the time.

60m Dash:
Erin Murphy: 8.37
Lauren Jonen: 8.47

Mile:
Megan McGreal: 5:25.02
Megan Mocogni: 5:29.13
Paige Oboikovitz: 5:43.73

3K:
Megan Mocogni: 10:48.18
Paige Oboikovitz: 11:14.18
Beth McGreal: 10:54.7
Abby Madden: 11:19.95
Emma Burkhardt: 11:57.18
Molly Wagener: 12:27.41
Caroline Skibinski: 12:49.38

Long Jump:
Jenny Na: 4.16m

Now, for the boys! (Alright, guys the girls had 13 PR”s not including the records. Let”s see if we can beat them at this at least.)

60m:
Jayme Roberts: 7.22
Yemi Sonoiki: 7.35

Mile:
Zach Boehmke: 4:39.43
Kevin Lapp: 4:44.23 (I”ve been waiting all season for Kevin to get a PR, so I could mention him. I mean, look at him! He”s a track athlete whose last name is Lapp! The man is a running pun. I think he”s my new favorite person. Sorry, Cyclops but you”ve been replaced.)
Kevin Hearne: 4:45.74
Ankit Aggarwal: 5:17.83 (PR”d by .01 seconds. Talk about cutting it close.)

3K:
Jack Morrissey: 9:31.92
Ryan Kelch: 9:33.55
Steve Krauklis: 9:34.68
David Choi: 9:45.46
Tyler Dixon: 9:58.05
Chris Kennedy: 10:35.76

60m Hurdles:
Scott Luedkte: 09.44

High Jump:
Tyler Blum: 1.85m

Triple Jump:
Manny Del Rio: 12.10m

That puts the guys at 15 PR”s to the girls” 13. Aww yeah! If we include the (non-baton passing) records, then we”re at 15 PR”s for the guys compared to… 17 PR”s for the girls. Nerts. Ah well, the takeaway is that we had 32 personal records on Saturday, and 10 club records. What a meet.

Finally, please welcome Hayley Dorfman, Mary Rosenwinkel, Leann Beckman, Sina Gartner, Anthony Morgan, and Jordan Hahn to the ITC team. May you have many fast races, very few slow races, and zero injuries.

Till Outdoor folks.

GVSU II : The Revenge, EIU II: The Revenge, Orange and Blue: The Revenge

It has come to my attention that people actually read these posts. Thanks a lot guys. Now when I run out of ideas, and these posts turn into dull, droning ‘”XYZ had this number associated with them. Yaaay.'” you”re all going to be very disappointed, and my teammates will give me a hard time I”ll feel like I”m letting you all down. So, thanks for the performance anxiety. And what are you doing reading these posts anyway?

If you”re a parent, you know what my parents did back in the Good Old Days, when I was a jolly, fresh-faced undergraduate, and everything was sunshine and rainbows? They called me and asked about my results on this impersonal electronic device thingy that you hold up to your ear. Then, once they had me on the line, they started asking the important questions: ‘”How are classes? How are your grades? What do you mean you weren”t studying when I called? Do you know how much I”m paying for you to attend college? Have you done laundry this week? What about shopping? You”re not living off of oreos and whip cream are you? When are you going to get a girlfriend? I”d like grandchildren at some point, you know. When was the last time you took out the trash? You”re actually using the trash can I spent good money on, right? Do you know how much that trash can cost? Your older sister never gave me this much trouble.'” So not only do you get a chance to connect with your child (and stop reading my posts), but you can make sure they”re not using their newfound independence to irrevocably ruin their lives.

If you”re a runner, you know what I did back in the Good Old Days, when I was a jolly, fresh-faced undergraduate, and everything was sunshine and rainbows? I called my parents, and told them my results on this impersonal electronic device thingy that you hold up to your ear. Then, once I had them on the line, I asked all the important questions: ‘”Can you pick me up tomorrow morning so I can bring my laundry home? I tried using the school machines, but some random girl left her underclothing in the washing machine, and it was really awkward, and I didn”t want to touch it. And while you”re picking me up tomorrow, think you could pick up some groceries? I”m down to oreos and whip cream, and while it was pretty awesome at first, now I feel nauseous. Also, I met this girl last night, and we really hit it off, and I was thinking of bringing her home tomorrow. Do you think that”s ok? Also, one of my friends kind of stole my trash can. Think you could get me a new one? I”ve been using my roommate”s hamper, but he got mad and emptied it on my bed, so now I”m sleeping on the floor. Also, my older sister isn”t going to be home tomorrow right? I really don”t want to deal with her right now. She”s such a jerk.'”[1] So not only do you get a chance to connect with your parents (and stop reading my posts), but you can get them to fix your irrevocably ruined life!

Anyway, if you managed to read this far, meet results! Our runners went to three separate meets this weekend, because team unity is for chumps. We ran at: GVSU, EIU, and UIUC. That”s right UIUC! The Real Track Team had a home meet this past weekend, and a few brave souls decided to show that you don”t need to have professional coaches, guaranteed track time, lots of fancy equipment, and loads and loads of natural talent to run fast in Champaign-Urbana (also they didn”t have to do any traveling).

First, club records:
Emma Grimes broke two club records on Friday at EIU. She set a new record for the Women”s Indoor Mile with a time of 5:09.2. She also broke the Women”s Indoor 800m record with a time of 2:20.29.
Congratulamations, Emma!

Now, personal records:
Ben Kanevsky ran at GVSU, and got PR”s in both the 400m and 200m. He ran a 52.73 in the 400, and a 24.28 in the 200.
Yemi Sonoiki also had a double PR at GVSU. He ran a 07.43 in the 60m Dash, and a 23.86 in the 200m.

Everyone else who PR”d ran at EIU.
Sarah Sheehan had a double PR at EIU (this has been the week for doubles, hasn”t it?), with a time in the 60m Dash of 8.61 and the 200m of 28.21.
Steven Krauklis PR”d in the 3000m with a time of 9:33.96.
Raushaun Warner PR”d in the 800m with a time of 2:12.2 (what is it with 800m PR”s and the number 2?)
Beau Barber PR”d in the 200m with a time of 25.37.

Finally, we have the new people. Give a great big ITC welcome to:
Jenny Na, Jared Konrardy, and Ankit Aggarwal, all of whom ran their first ITC meet at EIU this past Friday.

[1] My sister is not actually a jerk.[2]
[2] Hah! Yes she is.[1]

Grand Valley State University

Before we get started, a correction is needed for last week: Apparently, Quenton”s name is spelled with an ‘”o'” not an ‘”e.'” Needless to say, this sent all the ITC Scholars into a panic, seeing as the whole ‘”e'” thing was kind of fundamental to Knotreel”s prophecy. Fortunately, the Dashing Webmaster saved the day by busting out the original prophecy and studying it more closely. Turns out Knotreel just has really bad handwriting, and his ‘”o'””s just look like ‘”e'””s. I also want to make it clear that this was not my fault, it was all our Head Coach Ben Kanevsky”s fault for misspelling Quenton”s name on the meet entries. In fact, if anything in these posts are ever inaccurate, it”s all Ben”s fault.

Don”t worry Quenton, I”ll fix your name in the database today tomorrow by the end of the week I dunno. Someday. Maybe. Until then, if anyone asks, just tell them you were trying out the spelling ‘”Quenten'” to see how it felt, before deciding that you really only needed one repeated letter in your name.

Anyway, this past Friday and Saturday, the team went all the way to the Grand Valley State University in Michigan to compete. This was a particularly treacherous journey, because Michiginians are really bad at giving directions (they start jabbing at their palms like that has anything at all to do with finding the nearest bathroom)[1], so if any of our kids had gotten lost they would have been lost forever. Fortunately, none of them did.

Instead, a whole bunch of them drove 10 hours round trip to compete for the shortest amount of time in their entire lives[2]. First up, club records:

Emma Grimes broke the indoor record in the 3000m and the mile. She ran the 3000m in 10:33.89, and the mile in 5:13.89 (girl doesn”t know when to quit)[3]

Lauren Jonen broke both the 200m and 400m indoor records with times of 26.84 (in the 200) and 59.96 (for the 400m). Having broken two of Erin”s records in a single day, and still stinging from that whole ‘”Oh look I”m a record holder-oh wait, no I”m not'” from the beginning of the season, she proceeded to mock Erin mercilessly, maybe even driving her ‘”friend'” to tears.[4]

Not to be outdone, Jack Skelton proceeded to break both the 200m and 400m indoor record for the guys, with a time of 22.17 in the 200 and 49.12 in the 400.

Shannon Sledz broke the girl”s 800m record with a time of 2:23.73. Not bad for her third race with ITC.

Quenton, filled with rage at the misspelling of his name at my Ben”s hands, shattered the 60m dash record with a time of 6.98. He then proceeded to chase Ben from one end of GVSU to the other, screaming incoherently about ‘”o'””s and ‘”e'””s. Apparently, it was hilarious.[5]

And now, for the (Indoor) PR”s (there are a lot of them. I highly suggest going to the bathroom before you begin reading).

Erin Murphy ran a PR in the 400m with a time of 1:01.27
Abby Madden ran a PR in the mile with a time of 05:51.51 (hope she likes the number 5)
Paige Oboikovitz ran a PR in the mile with a time of 05:52.03
Megan Mocogni ran a PR in the 3000m with a time of 10:52.81
Beth McGreal ran a PR in the 3000m with a time of 11:04.71
Jayme Roberts ran a PR in both the 60m (7.33 seconds) and the 200m (23.17).
Ben Kanevsky ran a PR in the 400m with a time of 52.97 (probably because Quenton was still chasing him)
Mitch Sullivan ran a PR in the 800m with a time of 2:05.24
Evan White ran a PR in the mile with a time of 4:24.62
Joe Zeller ran a PR in the 3000m with a time of 8:56.07
Manny Del Rio jumped a PR in the Triple Jump with a distance of 12.08m

This Friday, the team will be going back to GVSU for GVSU II: The Revenge, and to EIU for EIU II : The Revenge. I, alas, will not be there. Fortunately, my Super Reliable Source will be at both of them, so who knows what kinds of Completely Factual Information he/she/it will have for me?

[1] And I should know. My mother”s from Michigan, and thanks to her, I can”t give directions to save my life. Thanks mom.
[2] Indoors
[3] Get it? Get it? It”s funny because she”s a distance runner, and distance runners run for a long time.
[4] I wasn”t actually there, but I totally heard this from a super reliable source who shall remain anonymous. The fact that A) Jonen wouldn”t ever actually do that, and B) Erin would probably do a little less crying, and a little more no holds barred beatdown just makes it all the more believable!
[5] Same source as [4]. It”s a good thing I”m only paying this guy/girl/swamp thing if he/she/it can tell me something interesting. Ensures quality.

Illinois College Jim Green Invitational

This past weekend our boys and girls in orange and white temporarily abandoned their moniker of ITC, and took upon themselves the noble mantle of ‘”armory'” in honor of their training center because of a technical glitch, and competed at the Jim Green Invitational at Illinois College. In the process, they fulfilled an Ancient Prophecy handed down by the Ancient Prophet Knotreel during the long lost Time of Founding:

When the Indy Team o” Corn discards their normal monikor in favor of their Place o” Training, then shall Queue Ech (with an ”e”) break the record set by Eff Aye. So too, shall the Daughter of Murphy break the record that does not exist, and immediately after jump three times, and she shall jump three times (inside) farther than any other ITC three jumper (inside). Finally, there shall be at this place of Ovals the fastest two-by-four (inside) in the history of the club.

This prophecy has baffled ITC scholars for countless years, until this past Saturday when it was fulfilled, and it all became clear:

Quenten (with an ”e”) Hardawy broke the Indoor 60m record (previously held by Fuad Akinbiyi) with a time of 07.07 seconds.

Erin Murphy broke the 60m dash record with a time of 08.38 seconds. The whole ‘”record that does not exist'” comes from the fact that your Friendly Neighborhood Webmaster put into the database an incorrect time of 08.39 due to an error in the results of last week”s Titan Open. He never deleted it, because he hasn”t yet gotten around to adding functionality to the results database for editing erroneously entered entries.

Erin Murphy also set the indoor Triple Jump record with a jump of 10.01 meters.

The last line about two-by-fours really confused ITC scholars seeing as how trees can”t run even when they”re alive, let alone after being chopped down and turned into building materials. However, after the men”s 4x200m relay team broke the club record with a time of 1:32.40, it became clear that Knotreel just got his numbers mixed up (happens to the best of us).

Now for personal record time:
Jayme Roberts had a PR in the 60m dash with a time of 07.34.
Beau Barber had an Indoor PR in the 400m with a time of 56.28.
Ben Kanevsky had an Indoor PR in the 200m with a time of 24.39.

And last but not least, Tare Emuze and Abby Ralph both had their first meet with the club this past weekend. Welcome to the club. Hope you had fun, and if you didn”t, well, I hope you have fun next week (or the week after that, or the week after that, or…).

As a final thought: 5K. Indoors. Apparently, that”s a thing. Think about that for a second. Not only do people running a 5K indoors have to run for a ridiculously long time at a ridiculously high speed, but they also have to count to 25. In their heads. While running really fast. I can”t count up to 25 when I”m sitting in a comfy chair and with full access to my fingers and toes (which alas, only go up to 20). If two weeks ago, you”d have told me that a more horrible race exists than the 600m, I would have laughed in your face. Now, I am not so sure.

Anyway, my hat”s off to Victoria Knauf, Joe Zeller, Matt Birkel, and Adam Sukiennik for having such supreme confidence in their ability to keep a mental tally while exhausted. You deserve all the cookies, and like half the ice cream.

Illinois Wesleyan University and SPIRE

This past weekend, the team went to two separate meets: the 2014 Titan Open, and the SPIRE Midwest Indoor Track and Field Open.

Titan Open Results

Unsurprisingly considering the high quality of the SPIRE track, two records were broken at the SPIRE meet:
Jack Skelton broke the Men”s Indoor 400m dash record with a time of 49.32.
He also broke the Men”s Indoor 200m record with a time of 22.33.

We also had a record broken at the Titan Open:
Lauren Jonen broke the Women”s 60m dash record with a time of 8.53 seconds…
Only to have that same record broken a few heats later by Erin Murphy with a time of 8.51 seconds.
Of course, Lauren also broke the record for the shortest amount of time in which an ITC club member has ever held a record. So who knows, maybe it was Lauren who won in the end.

Meanwhile, we also had several personal records this past weekend.
Ryan Brewster continued his streak of earning new 200m and 400m PR”s this weekend, with a time of 50.61 in the 400m and 22.77 in the 200m.
Jayme Roberts ran an indoor PR in the 200m with a time of 23.85

Finally, we have a whole lot of people who ran their first ITC races this past weekend:
Mike Kreiser(who spoiled himself by running at SPIRE. Alas, Mike not every facility is as nice as that), Ernesto Garcia, JP Llinas, Deepak Mani, Steven Decker, Jack Morrissey, Selena Wallace, Kim Naples, and last but certainly not least, Erin O”Donnell. Welcome to the team everyone. May your spikes never fall off in the middle of a race, and may your uniform never be forgotten.

Next week, the team is off to Illinois College, where the turns are tight, and the competition fierce. Wish them luck!

Eastern Illinois University

The Illinois Track Club began its indoor season last Saturday (January 25) with a meet at Eastern Illinois University. It was full to bursting with people running in circles, jumping around, and throwing heavy things. Results can be found here

Several of our athletes ran (indoor) personal records.

Note: The following information is based on the results database. Therefore, if anything I say is incorrect, please let me know at illinoistfclub+webmaster@gmail.com, and I will update the database appropriately.

Evan White PR”ed by 4 seconds in the indoor mile, with a time of 4:30.90
Beth McGreal PR”d by 10 seconds in the indoor mile, with a time of 5:29.03.
Joe Zeller ran an indoor PR in the 3000m by about 13 seconds with a time of 9:09.12.
Kevin Hearne ran a new indoor PR in the 800m with a time of 2:10.92, PR”ing by 6 seconds.
Scott Luedtke PR”d by about 9 seconds in the 600m.
Jayme Robers ran a 200m Indoor PR by .1 seconds with a time of 24.09.
Ryan Brewster had a really excellent meet. He ran an Indoor and Outdoor PR in both the 400m and 200m. He ran a 52.36 in the 400m, breaking a previous Outdoor PR of 52.9. He ran a 23.33 in the 200m, breaking a previous Outdoor PR of 23.59.

Finally, we have three runners who ran their very first races for ITC at EIU: Michael Giocolo, Shannon Sledz, and Ima Eno. Get out while you can Welcome to the team! I hope you experience much pain joy while training and racing with us.

However, special condolences need to be extended to Ima. Her very first race with ITC was the 600m, the Most Painful Race in ExistenceTM. I”m thinking someone should give her a cookie (make sure to ask her what her favorite kind is first).

Anyway, our next meets are this Saturday, February 1st. Some of us will be going to Illinois Wesleyan University, while the Truly Crazy Dedicated will be going all the way out to the SPIRE institute in Ohio. Good luck everyone! Run fast, jump long/high, throw far, and most of all have some fun.

NIRCA Great Plains Regional (11/2/2013)

It was a beautiful day for a cross country invitational this Saturday, as the Illinois Cross Country Club hosted the NIRCA Great Plains Regional at the University of Illinois Arboretum.  The women”s team claimed their fourth straight regional title, while the men”s team was 2nd, in the final race before NIRCA Cross Country Nationals.

Megan McGreal ran her best race of the season to claim the individual runner-up spot, in a time of 23:05.6 for the 6K.  Beth McGreal finished 3rd, running 23:24.0, followed by Megan Mocogni and Emma Grimes, who finished 5th and 6th in times of 23:36.3 and 23:42.7 respectively.  Rounding out the scoring 5 for the team was Michelle Turner, running 24:40.1, good enough for 8th place over all.

Despite coming up short in the team battle, the men”s team still turned in some good performances.  Mark Donohue led the team with a 5th place finish, finishing the 8K course in 25:56.1.  Jim Riddle (8th, 26:11.7), Eric De Guevara (9th, 26:32.2), Jared Ripoli (10th, 26:33.5), and Evan White (11th, 26:44.2) swept the 8th through 11th spots to complete the team scoring for the men.

Next up is the final race of the season, the 2013 NIRCA Cross Country Nationals in Hershey, PA, on November 16th.  The women”s team looks to build on their strong regional performance, and a 7th place finish last year on the difficult course, while the men will try and rebound from their runner-up finish this weekend, and improve on last year”s 4th place finish.
